Preseason is about seeing what guys can do. Why not start Sam Hurd alongside Roy Williams the next game and see what he does with the starting offense. Patrick Crayton is good, but why not give Hurd a shot at that second spot?

The theme of their rookie season has been shared experience.

The Dallas Cowboys gave an archetypal preseason-opening performance Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders.

Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd has been one of the biggest stories of this year's training camp. And after a 31-10 loss to the Oakland Raiders in the 2009 preseason opener Thursday night, Hurd - and his game-high 79 yards on five catches - is undoubtedly the biggest story of the game.

Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis walked to the team bus after Thursday's game - his first with the Cowboys - and knew there would be a call from his wife, Dana. He knew exactly what she wanted to talk about, too.

Call it a coincidence or even ironic that after 11 seasons with the Cowboys, veteran Greg Ellis played his first game in another uniform against his former team.
