According to Rivals, Martin was ranked as a four-star recruit coming out of Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, where he won two state championships. Rivals ranked him as the No. 2 player in the state of Indiana. He chose to go to Notre Dame over offers from Michigan, Stanford, UCLA, Virginia, Northwestern and Illinois.
Martin ranked as the 22nd best offensive tackle in Rivals' 2009 class. Other notable tackles in the class included: D.J. Fluker (ranked as the top tackle), Michael Schofield (ranked 18th) and Taylor Lewan (ranked 16th).
