Why the Cowboys should consider a big splash signing like Jarvis Landry

Kevin Sherrington, sports columnist for and The Dallas Morning News, answered questions about the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and local college sports during a live chat recently. Here are some highlights.

Question: With free agents like Jarvis Landry and Sammy Watkins becoming available this offseason, is there any chance the Cowboys go for the big splash signing?

Sherrington: They'll probably command more than the Cowboys want to pay at the position. But it's something they should consider. If they keep Dez at his current price, he'll cost $14 million next season, which will be sixth-highest among WRs. He is not the sixth-best WR in the league now. He's probably not in the top 20. If they cut him after June 1, they can spread out his cap hit over two seasons at $4 million a year. That's a pretty big savings, and I think they need to take advantage of it.
